THE PLANNING

Planning a wedding in Norway from Los Angeles was not, how should I put this, easy. At all. Was it fun? Yes. Very. But there were moments I wanted to elope, throw invitations in a bonfire and dance around it screaming madly. After making one-hundred-and-fifty party props, hand writing table cards and seating charts, answering everyone and their mothers e-mails about what to wear, where to stay, when to arrive – and all sorts of other things one does for a wedding – I was pooped. Excited, but pooped.

Great events are made up of a great team effort. As such, a wedding is a joint effort, where people chip in, speak up, dial in. My parents, however, really went out of their way for this tremendous party. Re-painting the house, fixing, buying, lifting, dropping, planting – they were beyond amazing.

AND SO IT BEGAN

SUNDAY – DAY 1

Carlos and I moved out of my parents home to the wonderful, comfortable and centrally located Saga Hotel. Friends and family started to arrive – the excitement was upon us. Sunday evening my mother cooked a scrumptious fresh salmon for my parents in law, sister in law with husband and son, cousins, grandparents of my (now) husband, Nonna and Nonno.

MONDAY – DAY 2

The Welcome party for all guests was on Monday – at my house – my mother had prepared everything from six quiches, smoked salmon, eggs, breads, cheeses, grapes, cakes, strawberries – my father had bought all the booze, got all the outdoor area ready brought over extra chairs. It was epic. When my wonderful friend Chiara and her amazing boyfriend Charlie showed up a few hours early as my sister in law, niece and I were getting ready in my room my heart lept out of my chest. It was suddenly very real! Chiara and Charlie helped a great deal – the extended family had started to arrive.

The real Wedding day finally arrived.

June 27th, 2012.

The morning started at 6am. Carlos and I got up and quietly snuck down to the breakfast room to have a bite alone, just us. It was wonderful. We were so excited we could barely talk, we giggle and smiled lots though. Then we parted ways, him to the guys room and me to our room to get ready. We did not to see each other again until I was walking down the aisle with my papa.

Where have all the Cowboy’s Gone?

I don’t know. I love their accent though, at least what I imagine a cowboy should sound like. The heavy drawl, the fitted jeans, the horse….  But that is not the point of today’s blog, the point is so much is going on. George Clooney was arrested, I got married (the first of three), I found an amazing boutique hotel in Oslo, Kali Dining is going superbly well (if you haven’t booked your dinner yet -DO!), I am about to plan a bachelorette party (Good Lord) and my gym instructor completed Iron Man with all of her toes broken.

I have much to write and heaps to tell, but for now I wanted to say remember to cream up. Yes, it’s dry outside no matter where you are (well at least if you are in Norway or California) so make sure your skin is hydrated! A good option are the body butter’s from The Body Shop. These thick and glorious these creams truly replenish your famished skin. The coconut one is my personal fave, I have to refrain from smelling myself too much in public (at home I couldn’t give a damn). I am obsessed with keeping hydrated – our body needs water to survive. I even managed to make my father drink six glasses of water a day whilst at home. He has never and I mean NEVER drunk a glass of water. He hates it. Six may have been a bit much as he spent much of his time peeing. My father, however, has never had to stop the car to pee, go into a cafe to pee or ever make any pee stop what so ever… as an active peer I believe it is about time he pees a little.

Before I love you and leave you – Happy Friday. (Is it me or did this week not even exist? It went far too fast.)

There is so much going on in LA this weekend with it being St. Patricks, The Los Angeles Marathon but seeing as it is going to rain I suggest (what I feel like doing more like…)

A trip to the LACMA – In Wonderland: The Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists in Mexico and the United States – Dinner at Terroni afterwards is a must.

A wet and wild adventure with Poseidon Stand-Up Paddle Board - Get a Lesson in Paddle Boarding with your friends (who cares if it’s raining – it adds to the fun) go halt the pending cold with a few beers at the Venice Ale House afterwards.

Un peu de Pamper – So the weather report says rain. Boo. What better excuse to go and beautify yourself. First stop, get those gorgeous brows with Kelly Baker at Kelley Baker Brows on Abbot Kinney. She is the best. Full-stop. Buy her lip-gloss too, as Kelley says, It’s all about the Brows and Lips.

Get Cut – give Angela Garcia at Euphoria Salon on Abbot Kinney a call. She will do your locks better than Goldy every could. (Bottom line – she is the best).

Prepare your body for the week to come at Odacite Garden Spa - Again when it rains, it pours so just give in completely and treat yourself to a massage at the wondrous Odacite Garden Spa (behind the Detox Market on Abbot Kinney).

Go to the Pictures – This is a Cinema weekend (I know it is St. Patty’s but have a beer pre and post movie) because this Sunday BARAKA is showing at the Egyptian Theatre and if you haven’t seen this visual masterpiece, please do.

Also – There will be a Malcolm McDowell Tribute this weekend at the Egyptian Theatre and you can come along to witness McDowell being honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday, March 16th at 11:30 am outside of the Pig ‘N Whistle!

Who has seen the Artist? I hope to finally see it this weekend! Will let you know my thoughts on it…pictures of the 1st wedding, an Oslo low down and much more to come…soon. To a screen near you.

Juicy Weekend

After having lived in California for over a year I think it is high time I try to do a juice cleanse for a couple of days. I will start tomorrow.

What will happen to me on a juice cleanse? I may become rather cranky for a while. Luckily my man will be busy with work so he will be out of my aggravation’s reach. I will get a massage with my beautiful Brazilian friend and flush out the alcohol from yesterday and all the stress I have been taking on lately. If not physically, at least psychologically.

I will keep you posted on my liquid journey and then soon I try on my first wedding dress. This is something I have avoided like the plague. I feel quite guilty for finding the whole concept of wedding dress shopping stressful and horrific. As a dear friend told me yesterday, every dress will look amazing and you will feel so very beautiful. That sounds great – maybe I will like it too much?

Back to my folding – I am a domestic goddess today folding beautifully as I listen to the madness on the Venice boardwalk. A lady screamed Hallelujah, Hip Hop blasting, mariachi music in the back drop, a dog fight broke out, a man screamed, an old lady jogging in pink tights… It’s all good.

Toodles.

If any of you have done a juice cleanse please give me recommendations as to what to drink, do and how to essentially survive…..Thank you!

WAW (What a Weekend)

Drinking my coffee reflecting upon the weekend I can’t stop sighing, huffing, making loud exclamations and generally being in disbelief of all the wondrous things that have taken place.

Here is a sneak peek of what has occurred. It is rather, mental.

Thursday 2nd of February:

Carlos and I woke up (stick with it). I skipped to Abbot Kinney to get my makeup done with the best brow shaper and makeup artist in the world Kelley Baker at Kelley Baker Brows and then headed over to Euphoria to get my “up-do” with amazing Jenna (Angela is my beloved hairdresser that cuts like no other. Fact)

Mood of the morning: Giddy with the urge to pee more than usual.

Looking amazing (thanks to the most beautiful makeup and wowza hair style) Carlos picked me up at 1.

I got in the car – we looked at each other and screamed. We are getting married.

So we had hyped the whole thing down as our “real” wedding is in Norway this summer, but as the day approached the importance of the whole thing sunk in. On the day, we were ecstatic and basically, hysterical.

We ran home, got changed, ironed, Carlos showered, I checked our papers, we put perfume on, ironed more, more perfume…ran out the door.

With Elsita, one of our beautiful witnesses in the car we sat in disbelief and sheer ecstasy on the way to the Beverly Hills Courthouse. “Oh my God” was repeated several times. I sat clutching the most beautiful bouquet thoughtful Elsita had bought me – a complete bride.

Arrived at Courthouse. Marc our second beautiful witness was there, camera in hand documenting the occasion.

A line of couples waiting to get married. Carlos and I in Mexican dress, other Mexicans stared at us and smiled.

Our turn. A tall lady with the most comforting eyes and perfect curls stood before us and smiled. Her dark skin radiating in the sun. “This way.”

A small room with an arch covered by fake flowers. In the corner there was a fake cake. Here we go.

The ceremony was lovely. We both said YES and now we are husband and wife…legally. The spiritual side is greatly missing. Cannot wait for Norway wedding – will be amazing.

After this more pictures. Then champagne and some quite delectable tapas at The Ivy. Then a glorious dinner at Picca accompanied by some wicked Pisco Sours.

Amazing night..(nudge nudge wink wink).

Friday 3rd of February:

Awoke with my HUSBAND next to me. Wholly cow!

He left to work. “Now what?” Perhaps a tad anti-climactic. He missed our lunch date. Didn’t call to explain. I waited like a fool. Deep breathe. Kept reading The Happiness Project. Gretchen Rubin, I love you. Quite literally adore you.

Apologetic husband came home. He is the best – (corny moment) – I am very much in love.

Dinner date with Chef Kevin Meehan cooking as part of his Kali Dining. Ate the most delicious food I have ever eaten in my life. Highly recommend this unique experience.

Lots of wine and deep deep sleep.

Saturday 4th February:

Awoke thirsty. Don’t usually drink so body is confused and perplexed. Liver not happy.

Breakfast. Wedding planning. Laundry. Sun. Waves. Lying on the sand like beached whales. Iguana’s. Delicious. Eating banana chips. Heaven.

Dinner at Umami. Oh mammi, that is one good burger. Cold beer. Ice cream sundae for desert. Delish.

Mahler’s 8th “Symphony of a Thousand” conducted by Gustavo Dudamel at the Shrine Auditorium. Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela playing. Jaw dropping.

Waited for Dudamel after the concert. Congratulated the whole orchestra and choir as we waited. Amazing. Dudamel! Maestro! En hora buena! We shook his hand. He was lovely. What a Conductor – es un tipazo!

Met Marc (one of our witnesses) and friends downtown for a quick drink at Baco Mercat. Got peckish. Oh dear, the kitchen is closed. Food looked divine and smelt good. mouth-watering. Must return. Waiter lovely too.

Sunday 5th February:

Recovering whilst everyone else watched the Superbowl.

Dinner at Gjelina, perfect end to a perfect weekend.

Monday 6th February:

Sipping coffee and writing this. A pigeon flies into the apartment. A scene from Hitchcock’s The Birds and I love Lucy ensues.

THE END.

P.S. A visual version of this post will appear shortly. I don’t have any pictures yet.

10 Basic Wedding Preparation Tips

Proposal Day

For Partner X:

On a vast private beach, on a cool summers night, at the top of a cliff – your partner pops the question. Finally the day has come. There you are standing before your future life partner who looks up at you with loving eyes asking for your hand in marriage.

For Partner Y:

Finally the moment has come. Having checked that the ring is in your pocket what seems like a million times you attempt to stay calm and breathe. “Can they tell that I am about to ask? Act cool! Okay, I’m going to do it…here I go…”

My Husband to be (and me)

For Both Partner X and Y:

Music plays as joyful weeks of engagement celebration unfold. Then the first conversation about the wedding occurs. Music screeches to a halt. Sigh. Bang. Clash.

˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜

This admittedly limited romantic scenario, which occurs in a plethora of ways, is merely to illustrate that the proposal is the “easy” bit. The euphoria and relief is quickly diluted by the actual planning of the wedding itself. Many of us enjoy imagining our wedding and some of say things like, “I just want to keep it low key, you know, a party for our family and friends” – really?

As with everything we do in life, honesty is key. Planning a wedding is a wonderful yet stressful event. Try and keep your feet on the ground and your head level. Easier said than done. But when going in to battle, you must go prepared. As Norwegian’s say “there is no such thing as cold weather. Just the wrong clothing” – so brace yourself and do this right.

1. The very Basics – A, B…D

Let cheerful and soothing candles work their magic

Do not discuss anything about the wedding when:

a) Tired

b) Hungry

c) Ladies: PMSing

d) Gentlemen: going through male PMS or a man cold.

2. Establish a Zen- like Wedding Mood

Set aside time to talk “Wedding”. Have a glass of wine, cup of tea, put on some soothing music. Make the environment calming and pleasant. This is supposed to be fun, remember?

A bit to calm the nerves (just to calm not intoxicate though!)

3. Confession time

When planning a wedding the most important thing to do, prior to starting any planning at all, is for you and your partner to establish the space to air how you have (or have not) imagined your wedding at one point in your lives. If you want butterflies released as you enter the reception room– admit it. Get it off your chest and speak your mind. After your confession take a break, have a laugh, dance around the kitchen; let it all sink in.

4. Post “wedding confession”

Compromise time. Spending the rest of your life with someone includes making a multitude of compromises. Your ideal wedding may be a little, or way, outside of your budget and not to your partners liking. Fear not – your wedding will be beautiful no matter what. Try and remember the simple things along the way and pinch yourself when you get bogged down with minuscule details. Instead of your glass being half empty, make sure it is half full. Then you can focus on all that can be done and all the things you do agree on.

5. Guest List – Round One

Simple Fact – Many Guests = More Dinero. The more people you invite, the more expensive the party. Try and invite the people you and your partner actually want at your wedding. Sounds obvious, no? Well as you all know in many cultures one invites everybody, even the best friend of your fathers best friend – and their cousin. You may not know them, but you “have” to invite them. Traditions change – this is your day. Don’t be afraid to do things your way. Everybody else can do it his or her way when it is their wedding but this wedding is you and your partner’s day! (This mantra should be repeated every day please). Using Google Documents make an excel sheet with a list of people you would want to invite. Try and organize them under categories i.e. friends, family, other. Some people you will invite out of courtesy knowing that they won’t come. Try and limit the extent of this courtesy, being too polite can be unnecessarily costly.

Time to get organized: colour code galore!

 6. Guest List – Round 2

Now go back over the list you and your partner compiled. Attempt to minimize polite invites and shorten the list. This can be stressful – remember candles, wine, tea and soothing tunes in the background. Smile, this is all about enjoying the process, okay? Once you have a guest list you will have a rough idea of how many people you need to budget for. Now stop worrying about this part.

7. Date

When do you want to get married? Take into consideration vacation times. If you want your nieces and nephews to be there remember they have school etc. Think about your closest relatives possible complaints. If your mother cannot tolerate heat due to health conditions don’t get married on the beach in Mexico when it’s at it’s hottest. Decide if you want to do your wedding sooner rather than later. Be patient and give yourself time to do things your way. Remember that even if you take people into consideration, this is you and your partner’s day. Repeat manta “this is our day”.

8. Location

Pick a country and location. If your partner and you come from different countries consider doing it in a neutral area; a location that is a place you both share and feel dearly about. Don’t be hard on yourselves; you can have a couple of countries/locations in mind. Think about the style of wedding you want when you are thinking of location. Consider whether those closest to you will have any limitations in arriving to the locations you are considering. As you finalize the budget you will find that the option will become clearer – compromise, remember?

9. Wedding Planner/List

If you can, try and meet with a wedding planner. They will talk you through the basics and offer you some guidance and perhaps help get you focused on what you want.

If you prefer to plan your wedding yourself consider using the valuable resources online and in magazines, for example theknot.com or Real Simple Weddings. There are tons of tips and organizational tools available online. Use these to make lists of what you need done prior to the big day (remember: it is a lot so get started as soon as possible).

Ask for help: Reach out to friends and family and start to delegate the work you need done. Set up a plan so that you do not micro-manage. If you ask your best friend to scout out bands, give her a period of time and then reconnect with her findings on a set date. Note to (your) self: Do not nag.

10.  Let the Wedding planning Commence!

Planning the rest of the wedding will take a lot of energy and good humour. Nobody is saying that it is easy, but fun is not always easy.

Along the way keep asking yourself two simple questions that will re-focus you and your partner in times of panic, stress and general frustration:

  1. Why are we doing this? (Because we love each other, we want to share our love with all of our friends and family etc etc.)
  2. Who are we doing this for? (First and foremost: Ourselves – then our family and friends)

Always remind one another how much you love each other.

Smile. Laugh. And enjoy the process.
